Motorists urged to pay their fines timeously: JP Smith

A total of 360 individuals have been arrested by the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement officials over the past week. Over 71 000 traffic by-law offences have also bee recorded.

MMC for Safety and Security JP Smith said an officer using the Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system in Bellville identified a motorist with 262 fines and 114 warrants.

The 34-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Smith says, it is important to pay timely fines and announced a roadshow, starting on December 2.

“We’ve highlighted multiple arrests in recent months where scoff laws have been tracked down either by our specialist tracing team or via the NPR technology. This system has improved efficiency by allowing our officers to focus on the right vehicles, which means it is becoming increasingly difficult to hide. And we therefore advise motorists to pay their fines timeously if they do want to end up behind bars.” Said Smith.
