Six WC SAPS officers arrested for defeating the administration of justice and for submitting false financial claims

Western Cape police commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, has reaffirmed his commitment to rule out all forms of corruption within the SAPS. This comes after two sergeants and four constables attached to Khayelitsha Detective Service were arrested on Wednesday, for defeating the administration of justice and 26 counts of fraud after they fraudulently submitted false financial claims.

In a statement, police confirmed that five of the officers were arrested at Khayelitsha SAPS when they reported for duty, while the sixth suspect was later arrested at his Khayelitsha home.

‘’According to records the members travelled to Eastern Cape for investigation between 2022-01-18 and 2022-09-25 and on their return submitted fraudulent claims for subsistence and travelling allowance to the total amount of R16 065. 00. Allegations reveals that they would pay for accommodation and then request a receipt with a higher amount as paid. Members would also share a room, but then request two separate receipts,’’ said Captain F.C. van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Van Wyk says one of the officers also faces a charge of defeating the administration of Justice on another Khayelitsha case after he failed to arrange the travel and accommodation arrangements for a witness in a pending murder case.

‘’After thorough investigation by the Anti-Corruption Unit the docket was presented to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) who decided to charge the members on 26 counts of fraud and one count of defeating the administration of Justice. On 2025-03-04 the magistrate at Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court authorised warrants of arrest which were executed.’’

The members are in custody and are due to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ court on Thursday

On Tuesday, three officers appeared in the Blue Down Magistrates Court after the trio who is based at Nyanga SAPS, allegedly robbed a spaza shop in Mfuleni in October 2024. According to police, the officers allegedly forced the owner at gunpoint to open the safety room from where they took an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.
