A 34-year-old driver in connection with the death of a Bonteheuwel teen, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Gershwin Jacobs appeared in the Parow Regional Court on 6
February 2024. He was under the influence of alcohol, when he hit 18-year-oldTatum Hendricks and another man with his car in October 2022, crashing into two
properties on Bluegum Avenue. Hendricks was hit with such force that she landed
on the roof of a nearby house. She succumbed to her injuries in hospital. He
also admitted that he did not have a driving licence, and had a learner’s
licence in 2002.
The father of three had been out on bail.
He was sentenced to three years for culpable homicide and
12 months for reckless and negligent driving. The sentences will run
concurrently.
Bonteheuwel ward councillor, Angus Mckenzie, who
accompanied Tatum’s mother to court, said: “The family is now able to put this
to bed and somewhat move on. Jacobs, who pleaded guilty, was finally sentenced
after 484 days and there was finally a little justice for Tatum.
“Mishka will never see her daughter again. It is sad that
the long arm of justice sometimes does not give justice to those who feel the
pain the most. We will never forget Tatum,’’ he added.
