India overtakes South Africa in AIDS infections

India has overtaken South Africa as the country with the most Aids infections. This was revealed as the UN programme against the disease warned that the epidemic would spread to every corner of the world. An annual report by UNAids has found that India has around five-point-seven-million people infected with the disease, compared to South Africa's five-point-four-million sufferers. Though infection rates in India, at less than one percent of people, are far below those of sub-Saharan Africa, where up to a third of people are infected in some countries, the sheer population of Asia means even small statistical gains equate to huge numbers of people.
