Luxury block of flats collapses
The luxury 20-million rand Dunes development at Jeffrey’s Bay is to be imploded after the first floor of the 20-flat complex collapsed at the weekend. The developer intends starting from scratch again. The first floor collapsed on Saturday while the workers were on the basement floor. Die Burger reports that no lives were lost because the concrete slab making up the first floor sank through the 10 concrete support pillars below but remained hanging above the basement. All construction has been stopped and quotations have been called for imploding the whole development. Lamprecht Projects manager Wessie van der Westhuizen, who owns the development, said he thought there should be more and stronger support pillars to support the upper floors.
