Children have the opportunity to have an education facility being set up in a bird paradise at Zeekoevlei.

The False Bay Ecology Park has been opened over the weekend in a former abandoned building that was used by the Cape Flats wastewater treatment works.

The park covers 1200 hectares and will include the Rhondevlei
Reserve, the Coastal Park landfill site, Cafda Stables Craft and the Culture Centre and the Zeekovlei Nature Reserve.

It will accommodate 120 pupils on various environmental tours. The programmes include bird watching, water quality testing and fishing. Other interesting activities are dragon boating, orientation walks and trips to wastewater treatment works,

The cover charges will be kept low and children are accompanied by skilled field rangers.

The centre will be run by the Zeekoevlei Environmental Education Programme.

Children should expect to see 250 bird species, including fish eagles, pelicans and flamingoes.
