Cosatu’s Tony Erenreich has entered into the race to become Cape Town’s next mayor.
The union’s provincial office confirmed Erenreich’s candidacy, saying the matter had been fully discussed with the other members of the alliance.
Political analysts say the move is unprecedented as ANC policy normally dictates that mayoral candidates are chosen by the party’s provincial branches.
Cosatu national spokesperson Patrick Craven says all over this province, Cosatu members have been nominated for Councillors by ANC branches, as recognition of their role in driving the transformation agenda in province and country as a whole.
