At least 22 striking workers at the Ekurhuleni Municipality have been arrested for intimidating their non-striking colleagues.
Police were called in yesterday after a municipal employee at the Kempton Park civic centre was assaulted and municipal property was damaged.
Municipality spokesperson Zweli Dlamini says they are committed to securing a peaceful resolution with the SA Municipal Workers’ Union.
He however gave striking workers a stern warning that no acts of hooliganism will be tolerated.
Meanwhile, Samwu says its members may stay away from the upcoming local government elections if the African National Congress fails to act decisively to solve their problems.
Samwu said the premise that the ANC is worker friendly is becoming increasingly hard to believe and its members will not vote for the party if they are unhappy.
