A provincial traffic law enforcement officer was assaulted by a 52 year old male who was suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol this weekend.

It is alleged a female passenger in the vehicle pushed the traffic officer to prevent the arrest of the suspect.

The driver pulled a baseball bat from his car and assaulted the traffic officer at a garage in Laingsburg.

Another traffic officer arrived on the scene to assist her colleague and she too was also assaulted by the passenger.

The driver reportedly threatened the arresting officer that he will shoot and kill them.

Warrant Officer Lindikhaya Mkhontwana says police found the man’s car abandoned with a flat tyre and the man was later arrested in the nearby bushes.

Mkhontwana says, the female passenger of the car handed herself over to the police and was also arrested this morning.

The two suspects will be appearing in court today on charges of assault, drunken driving, resisting arrest and threats of violence.
