The police have denied what they call a patently false allegation that National Commissioner Bheki Cele is the subject of a corruption investigation by Richard Mdluli.
The Crime Intelligence head and three of his colleagues are appearing in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court today in connection with a murder committed more than a decade ago. A statement says Cele is not, and has never been, the subject of any criminal investigation.
In the statement, police also admit that Cele was yesterday evening for the first time handed a copy of a recently declassified letter marked “Top Secret”.
Mdluli had allegedly sent it to Cele and several others in November. In the letter, Mdluli pleads for the murder investigation against him to be stopped, claiming it to be victimisation and abuse of state resources.
Without commenting on the contents, Cele states that Mdluli was never cleared of the murder allegation, as alleged in the letter.
