Residents angry over library closure

The people living in Hangberg in Hout Bay will have a protest today over the temporary closure of their library. Timothy Jacobs of the Hout Bay Civic Association told the Cape Times that the library played an important role in the community, but it had been closed since the beginning of the week.
Jacobs says the reason of the closure was the shortage of staff throughout the city which meant there was no relief for staff wanting a vacation.
He adds that compared to the Hout Bay library, their library Imizamo Yethu library is so small that it is hard to even spot.
A protest has been called today at ten-o-clock this morning in Bayview Road in Hout Bay.
Wesley Douglas spokesperson for deputy mayor Andrew Arnolds, who is responsible for libraries, says there is no money to take on other librarians.
Provincial government had given R10 million to buy books, but Douglas says the problem is the shortage of staff.
Douglas says this is a major concern and it will affect the whole province, because so far seven librarians in other areas had already given notice.
