Cape Town police investigate the shooting of a tourist

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and robbery after an American tourist was shot in Cape Town on Friday.

The 55-year-old man is now recovering in the hospital after the incident.

The man was taken to Nyanga after he rented a car to take him to his rental accommodation.

"I am extremely lucky to have made it out alive. But, as soon as I am given the all-clear, I am leaving the country," said the man.

It is alleged that he used a map application on his iPhone to get to his rental accommodation in Simons Town. He was, however, seemingly directed through the nearby township to get to his destination.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the motive was robbery.

"He was robbed of his personal belongings, documents and clothing. A case of attempted murder and robbery with a firearm was registered at Mowbray," Van Wyk said.

No one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident.
