No need to panic, says Health Department, as new Mpox cases surface

The Department of Health has called on the public to take extra precaution as three new laboratory-confirmed cases of Mpox have been detected.

PICTURE: NICD

According to the department, the first case, identified on 21 February 2025, involves a 30-year-old male residing in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, who recently travelled to Kampala, Uganda.

“The patient was diagnosed with Grade I Mpox virus, which is currently circulating in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda and has been reported in travellers returning to many locations around the globe,” the statement read.

The other two confirmed cases - a 30-year-old male and a 27-year-old female, both from Ekurhuleni, were identified through thorough contact tracing and monitoring efforts led by outbreak response teams.

‘’This highlights the importance of information sharing by primary cases for contact tracing. All three cases are now recovering and self-isolating at home.’’

The latest statistics bring the total cumulative number of positive cases from 25 to 28 cases, including three deaths since the outbreak in May last year.

Meanwhile, these are the first positive cases of Mpox recorded in South Africa for 2025, after the last infection was reported in September 2024.

‘’Globally, Mpox continues to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) and a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) as per the declarations by both the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in August 2024. While the department assures that there is no need for public alarm, it stressed the importance of remaining vigilant regarding the transmission of Mpox,’’ read the statement.

Symptoms to watch for include a rash lasting two to four weeks, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, and swollen glands. Generally, Mpox presents as a mild, self-limiting disease with a low case fatality rate. The department said the risk of widespread transmission in South Africa at this time is considered low; however, the department said the disease can affect individuals across all ages, genders, sexual orientations, and races.

“The department urges all people experiencing any of the symptoms, with or without travel history to countries and regions experiencing Mpox outbreaks, or who had close contact with known Mpox patients to seek medical care. Although, the country has a limited stock of Mpox-specific vaccines for the treatment of patients who experience severe health complications as a result of this disease,” it said.

Residents were also reminded to practice handwashing with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitisers, especially before eating or after using the restroom, to help mitigate the spread of the disease.

NATJOINTS says no extension will be given to spaza shops registeration deadline

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has confirmed that no extension will be granted as Friday marks the deadline for spaza shop owners and vendors to register their businesses with local municipalities.

Failure to do so, results in businesses potentially facing penalties.

“Following several engagements within the IMC [Inter-Ministerial Committee] and in consultation with the President, a decision has been taken not to extend the deadline of the 28th February 2025, as ample time was given to business owners to comply with the Presidential directive,” NATJOINTS said on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on foodborne illnesses and illicit goods expressed satisfaction with the progress made in implementing government interventions ahead of today’s deadline.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, in November 2024, announced a 21-day period for the registration of food handling business. This was extended on 18 December 2024 to 28 February 2025.

The intervention follows a serious incident involving foodborne illnesses, which resulted in over 890 cases and nearly 30 deaths since September 2024. In October last year, six primary school children from Naledi, Soweto, died after allegedly eating snacks from a foreign-owned local spaza shop.

“It is important to emphasise that the work of multi-disciplinary teams under the NATJOINTS will continue beyond this deadline. Enforcement of the law is not an event, and we are committed to continuing the work to formalise, regularise the sector and compliance with the law,” said the NATJOINTS.

This includes warehouses and other establishments that unlawfully stock hazardous chemicals, banned substances, and pesticides.

“We have strengthened our capacity and systems to monitor and database this sector. This will enhance our ability to support and encourage their growth and formalisation, while at the same time ensuring adherence to business registration and food safety laws including municipal by-laws.”

The IMC stressed that registration alone does not mean that a business is eligible to trade.

To obtain a licence or permit to trade, business owners must comply with all health regulations and municipal by-laws related to conducting business.

Where business owners are found to be non-compliant, the law will be enforced and this includes fines, arrests, and closures as applicable.

“We want to emphasise that our cardinal aim is to help businesses to comply with the law and to ensure the safety of our citizens and children. Working together we can build a safer, healthier, and more equitable food ecosystem for all South Africans,” said the co-Chairs.

Basic Education Minister defends Mi-Desk initiative

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has defended the department's partnership with fast-food franchise McDonald's. This comes as viral photos caused a stir after brightly McDonald's branded desks went viral.

Gwarube had handed over Mi Desks to Grade 1 pupils at St Paul’s Primary school in Bo Kaap on Monday. The desks can be folded into bags that children can carry home.

PICTURE: X - @Siviwe_G

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Basic Education Lekgotla, Gwarube said the department had considered various factors before making the decision.

"Firstly, these desks have been approved by UNESCO, they are 2 kilograms heavy and UNESCO has indicated that these are absolutely appropriate but what is important for me is that there are children in this country who go to places and homes where they don’t have even an area to do their homework."

"It allows a child who comes from a poor home where there's no electricity to have, firstly, a light that allows them to do their homework. Secondly, it also allows them to be able to have a space to be able to do their homework. Of course, if you've got space at home, you may not need it,’’ she added.

PICTURE: X - @Siviwe_G

Gwarube said the safety of the carrying of the desks has been scientifically proven by scientists.

"I promise you, if you're a child from a small house where there's no place for you to do your homework, you will appreciate being able to do that. So, one, on the safety of the carrying of the desk, that has been scientifically proven to us by scientists. Number two, this is a matter of saying where children need this help, this is where they will have it."

Man attacked for not answering if he is gay

A man from Manenberg has undergone facial reconstruction surgery after being viciously attacked as he was falsely accused of being gay.

The shocked family of Rayarn Kennis, 22, says he has spent the past two weeks recovering in hospital after the vicious attack on Valentine’s Day while walking home from work.

His family has shared CCTV footage of the alleged attacker and explained the bizarre attack dates back to December.

The family rushed the young man to hospital after he arrived at home bleeding after the vicious beating.

Rayarn works at a clothing store in Sable Square and in December this customer came into the shop.

The footage shows Rayarn taking a pair of shorts from the rack to help another customer and this guy gets angry and asks him ‘are you gay' 'Is jy dan gay?’ in Afrikaans.

The CCTV shows Rayarn smiling because the guy must have gotten the wrong idea and Rayarn simply walks away, but the customer threatened him before leaving the store.

While walking home to Sherwood Park a car stopped and a guy got out and started attacking the victim with a knuckle buster. They took his bag and he proceeded to run to another relative for help.

Spending weeks in hospital recovering the family were informed that the bones in Rayarn’s face needed to be reconstructed due to the extensive damage caused.

The family is still very confused about why he would go so far to follow him and wait over a simple incident that he misunderstood.

Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana confirms a case has been opened and says: “Manenberg police registered an assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm case for investigation following an incident that took place on 14 February at around 7.30pm in George Street, Manenberg.

“According to reports the 22-year-old victim was walking on the mentioned street when the suspect hit him from behind”.

No one was arrested, and investigation continues.

Western Cape Health refutes claims that paramedic was raped

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has refuted claims that one of its employees was raped during an incident where the female paramedic was hijacked.

Two health personnel came under attack last Friday in Khayelitsha, whilst waiting for a patient in front of Matthew Goniwe Clinic. The police said a paramedic was with her colleague when a branded patient transport Toyota Quantum was hijacked in front of the health facility.

‘’Report suggests that the complainant, aged 25, and her colleague, both deployed on a local ambulance, were static at a medical facility in Makhaza on Friday 21 February 2025 at around 3.20pm when seven males hijacked the vehicle and fled. The complainant reported that she was raped and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The vehicle was recovered in nearby QanduQandu. The suspects are yet to be arrested,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police spokesperson, at the time.

Despite Makhaza police investigating cases of carjacking, kidnapping, and rape, the provincial health department released a statement on Thursday afternoon, confirming the incident, but denied that the woman was raped.

‘’ The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness wishes to correct the unverified and incorrect information that was issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) regarding the hijacking of one of our EMS staff members. This information was later updated, but it resulted in incorrect media reporting,’’ said Maret Lesch, a spokesperson for the Western Cape  Department of Health and Wellness.

‘’We can confirm that one of our HealthNET vehicles, with an EMS staff member, was hijacked on 21 February 2025. Although our staff member was assaulted when the attackers tried to forcibly take her personal belongings, she was NOT raped and was NOT physically harmed. She managed to escape her attackers and is severely emotionally traumatised. The continued incorrect reporting that she was raped by SAPS and media houses contributed significantly to her traumatic experience and emotional harassment. The Department wishes to correct his matter to not further contribute to her traumatic experience,’’ she added.

Lesch says counselling services have been made available to her, adding that the Department will continue to provide support to her.

‘’We strongly condemn this criminal incident, violence, and unverified reports against one of our essential workers who are dedicated to saving lives and providing critical care.’’

WC Premier delivers SOPA in Beaufort West

Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, on Wednesday, delivered the 2025 State of the Province Address (SOPA), at the official opening of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, outlining the Western Cape Government’s plans for the year ahead and reflecting on its achievements over the past year.

COURTESY: X - @WCProvParl

This year’s SOPA was held at the old Dutch Reformed Church Hall or "NG Kerk" in Beaufort West. Winde’s theme for this year’s SOPA was ‘’Make 2025 the year we all step up’’

‘’stepping up is exactly what leadership demands especially in times of uncertainty. In May last year, we all raised our hands to serve and made that choice. But leadership does not only begin when you are elected. Leadership is about how we act and how we are constant in a world that feels increasingly divided and uncertain.’’

‘’For the past five years each time I have delivered this annual address we have faced major challenges. Whether it was a funding shortfall, a water crisis, or a global pandemic; time and again we have been called to step up. Yes, it has tested us. We all have a few more grey hairs and wrinkles to show for it. But we have also proven – beyond any doubt – that we can adapt, innovate and respond, no matter the crisis… In times like these, it can be tempting to take the easy route—to play politics instead of solving the world’s wicked problems. But that is not who we are. We are not afraid to make the tough calls, and difficult decisions because we know that when we focus on one clear goal we will achieve the extraordinary’’

Winde says his provincial government aims for the next five years is helping businesses grow and to create jobs

‘’More people can find a job in the Western Cape than anywhere else in the country. For the last half of 2024 our employment rate was below 20% at 19,6%. The Western Cape now leads on all four employment metrices that Statistics South Africa measures quarterly. But our work is far from done. Unemployment is still horrifyingly high. One in five jobseekers is still unable to find work. We recognise the critical need that social grants play for the vulnerable, but I want us to rather celebrate people progressing off social grants because they have found a job and a chance to step up for themselves.

We also know that programmes like Expanded Public Works help our residents get that critical step up. Last week, the Western Cape Government hosted Community Information Sessions in Kwamandlenkosi, here in Beaufort West, informing residents of upcoming EPWP 2-month temporary employment opportunities. A job is more than just financial security. It gives you purpose. It restores dignity. But weak national economic growth is holding us back.’’

Winde said that the Government of National Unity (GNU) has given South Africa a reason to be hopeful, following years of decline.

‘’The GNU is imperfect. We acknowledge this. But I believe the centre will hold, and that all GNU partners – no matter their policies and ideologies – have one thing in common: putting our residents first so that we can see our country succeed. Here in the Western Cape and South Africa we are often consumed with all that is wrong. But I was recently invited to participate in the Munich Security Conference and what struck me was that while the north is consumed with talk about tariffs, increasing military spending, wars, cuts to critical aid and division, here in South Africa and particularly in the Western Cape our focus has shifted much more to hope and optimism: in South Africa because of the hope that the GNU has given us all; in the Western Cape because we are the province of hope and opportunity in action.’’

‘’While the GNU has begun the difficult task of righting the wrongs of previous administrations, we are grappling with the consequences now. The next few years are going to be very difficult for our country as we work to change South Africa’s trajectory. Many of the challenges remain with us. These challenges, particularly jumpstarting South Africa’s economy, will further intensify before the situation improves.

‘’We know that if South Africa succeeds the Western Cape succeeds, and we will build on the foundations that this government has laid to ensure a thriving jobs-rich economy that supports the work of the GNU.’’

COURTESY: X - @WCProvParl

The Premier believes that more jobs will be created in the agriculture sector. According to him, over 240,000 people are employed in the sector in the Western Cape

‘’That is why we must do even more to grow the many opportunities in this critical industry. Over the past several years the Western Cape’s agri-processing exports to the rest of Africa increased from 35% to 37%, and the relative share of primary agriculture and agri-processing to the Americas increased from 6% to 9% and 7% to 10%.’’

Winde also touched on education, and boasted about well the province is doing when it comes to matric pass rate, the Western Cape has the second-highest pass rate in the country for Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN)

‘’While our youth unemployment rate is more than 10 percentage points lower than other provinces, we must keep pushing forward. That is why we are working with partners to create pathways into jobs, entrepreneurship, and further education.’’

When it came to healthcare and social services, Premier Alan winde highlighted the province’s Cabinet-level Committee on Food security and Nutrition, which draws in resources from multiple departments to reduce food insecurity, improve nutrition, and support families.

‘’For those who have fallen to the margins of society, NGOs and government are often their last hope. But in this tough economic climate, NGOs are among those hardest hit, even as their role in supporting our most vulnerable residents remains critical. That is why we have partnered with the Health Foundation to implement the Cape Care Fund—an initiative to strengthen support for organisations that provide essential care and assistance. Our GBV Ambassador Programme, has trained over 170 residents to raise awareness in their communities about gender-based violence. These tenacious individuals think little of giving of their own time as part of our broader efforts to end all forms of violence, at the same time offering much-needed help to our social workers. Ordinary residents are stepping up and help us to end this scourge. Just yesterday, we launched the eighth Gender-Based Violence Ambassador programme for the Central Karoo. To expand our service footprint, we have taken our services on the road. Three DSD mobile offices – the first initiative of this kind for the Western Cape and South Africa - are traveling across the province, to bring services and dignity closer to you.’’

Winde says over the next decade, provincial government will invest R18.5 billion in metro healthcare infrastructure, increasing capacity, efficiency, and access to specialised care

‘’Villiersdorp now has a new Ambulance Station that houses three ambulances and a HealthNet vehicle to serve rural communities. This improves emergency response times and provides a base for training EMS staff, benefiting over 15,000 residents and handling approximately 500 calls monthly.

The Tygerberg Hospital Modernisation project is proceeding well. This R10 billion redevelopment will transform this hospital into a cutting-edge facility, improving specialised care and addressing Cape Town’s growing population needs. Planning is under way to deliver regional hospitals to the Klipfontein and Belhar communities.

In terms of infrastructure, and Winde says by the end of the current financial year, its road crews are aiming to repair and maintain more than 1 million square metres of road.

When it came to safety and, Winde admitted that the high levels of crime is a scourge. In August last year, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Western Cape Government, City

of Cape Town, and national government was signed and this agreement aims for a closer

collaboration, better use of resources and a shared focus on data and evidence in

policing. The Premier also touched on its Law Enforcement Advancement Programme officers, or LEAP.

Last year, we initiated a trial redeployment of LEAP resources. This saw LEAP officers redeployed to 6 precincts in Cape Town in a double-up project. Together with a 120- member roving Reaction Unit and SAPS members, we have intensified our focus on areas with high murder rates and the trial is paying dividends. Crime statistics for Quarter 4 of 2024 saw major year-on-year increases in illegal firearm arrests in Delft (up 70%),

Gugulethu (94%), Mitchells Plain (33%), and Philippi East (40%). These areas have benefitted from increased policing resources under this strategy. Similarly, drug arrests have increased in these hotspots, including Delft (43% increase), Gugulethu (114%), Khayelitsha (62%), and Philippi East (333%)

According to Winde, a thriving jobs-rich economy needs reliable, affordable and renewable water and energy. As such, he says his government has repurposed its Energy Council into the Integrated Energy and Water Council—

Despite good rainfall last winter, we cannot afford to be complacent. Annual rainfall is declining and could drop by 30% by 2050. Our 15-year Western Cape Integrated Drought and Water Response Plan is already being implemented, ensuring that:

• Science and collaboration guide our approach.

• Residents and businesses remain water-wise, even in non-drought years.

• Investments in infrastructure protect our water supply.

‘’The Western Cape’s electricity demand is growing fast—from 4,000MW to 4,479MW this year alone. If we want to grow our economy, we must continue expanding energy resilience. Our Energy Resilience Programme launched just two years ago, has already unlocked 2,000MW of new energy development and shown what can be achieved when you collaborate and focus on a critical foundation of the economy.’’

Winde concluded his address by giving hope to residents of the Western cape saying one should work together to better the province.

‘’Beyond all the hard work we have put in over the past year, I am filled with pride when I see government being done right like it is done here in die Wes Kaap.

While there is much to do, we can feel proud for all that we have been able to achieve. Urgency and hard work underscore how this government functions, because every day each of us is stepping up.

In the year ahead, every single day we have a choice, we can choose to be negative, break down, fight among ourselves or we can choose to step up, be constructive, to build a better province. This year let us all make a choice to step up to build a better Western Cape.

SASSA WC distances Itself from City of Cape Town Outreach Programmes Assisting with Card Migration Process

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in the Western Cape says that it is not involved in the card migration process being carried out through certain outreach programmes conducted by the City of Cape Town.

PICTURE: GovernmentZA

SASSA beneficiaries have until 20 March 2025 to swop their gold SASSA card for the black Postbank card. According to SASSA – as of 13 February, 48 142 Postbank Black Cards have been issued in the Western Cape. 287 914 beneficiaries’ SASSA Gold Cards still need to be replaced.

‘’While we acknowledge the good intentions behind the City’s efforts to assist beneficiaries, it is important to note that these initiatives are independent of SASSA and are not part of our official processes. SASSA urges all beneficiaries to follow the official communication channels provided by the Agency for card migration,’’ said Shivani Wahab, Sassa Western Cape spokesperson.

‘’The card migration process, which is part of the transition to a new payment system, is exclusively managed by SASSA and Postbank. Beneficiaries are advised to visit their nearest SASSA office, or use the official SASSA and Postbank helplines, websites, or SMS services for accurate, up-to-date information regarding their card migration from the SASSA Gold Card to the Postbank Black Card,’’ he added.

SASSA said while local councillors in various wards may be providing assistance, SASSA is not directly involved in these community outreach efforts.

‘’SASSA takes the security and privacy of its beneficiaries seriously, and we caution against participating in any unauthorised programmes or services that claim to assist with the card migration,’’ said Shivani Wahab, Sassa Western Cape spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Social Development Minister Nokuzola Tolashe has issued a public apology to social grant beneficiaries who have endured long queues, excessive travel costs, and system failures while attempting to swap their gold SASSA cards for Postbank black cards. This comes after numerous complaints from grant recipients who have struggled to access the service, particularly in remote areas where post offices are either non-existent or far away.

Tolashe embarked on a three-stop oversight visit in the Western Cape on Monday, starting in Grabouw, moving to Khayelitsha, and concluding in Bellville. The objective of the visit was to assess the situation first-hand and ensure that interventions are in place to alleviate the burden on grant recipients.

Cape Town clinics reports fewer child cases of diarrheal disease

There has been a 25% decrease in the number of children younger than five who visited Cape Town’s public clinics with diarrheal disease since October 2024.

PICTURE: Pixabay

Between October 2023 and January 2024 City Health recorded 6 267 cases of diarrhoea in children under five years of age, compared to 4 701 cases between October 2024 and January 2025.

The period between November and May is regarded as Surge Season as it usually coincides with an increase in diarrheal disease. Officials within the City of Cape Town are urging parents and caregivers to remain on high alert for the rest of the summer.

‘’City Health continues to prioritise the health and safety of our communities, and particularly children, as we navigate Surge Season. We acknowledge the progress made thus far in reducing the caseload, but also emphasise that the road ahead requires continued vigilance and commitment. I want to commend the tireless efforts of our healthcare workers, the community, and all involved in what is an encouraging downturn in the number of cases. We cannot rest on our laurels as we still have a way to go in ensuring the health and safety of our children,’’ said Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.

‘’The City has made significant strides in preparing our healthcare system, but we need continued collaboration with our communities to effectively manage this critical season. It’s crucial for caregivers to remain alert and take necessary precautions to protect young children during this time,’’ she added.

Higham advised caregivers to be aware of the warning signs, including dehydration, rapid breathing, and unusual lethargy, and seek medical attention immediately if these symptoms are observed.

COSATU to protest against WC teacher job cuts at SOPA

Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, will be greeted by protesters outside the Beaufort West NG Church on Wednesday afternoon, as he prepares to deliver his annual State of the Province Address (SOPA).

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and its affiliates are planning to strike against what they call the “unilateral draconian decision to cut over 2 000 teacher posts” in the Western Cape.

The trade union held a briefing, last Monday, where they announced plans for a stay away, and called on all workers to support the protest action.

COURTESY: SADTU Western Cape

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) did not renew contracts at the end of 2024, as it blamed national treasury for budget cuts to the education sector,

COSATU provincial spokesperson, Malvern de Bruyn, said it is seeking a one-day shutdown for businesses in the province over the cuts to the teacher posts.

“We want the provincial government and the MEC of Education to change their mindset and review the decision and reinstate those workers whose contract was terminated.”

“We are saying reprioritise your budget and bring the money back to education. They use the money for safety and security, but the sad reality is that they are just now missing workers again... we are saying reprioritise and bring the money back to where it belong,’’ he added.

De Bruyn said they are taking this action after the matter was referred to the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac), and thereafter they failed to reach an agreement, which has now prompted them to take strike action.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said they respect organised labour’s right to embark on industrial action.

‘’But as I’ve always said it is counter-productive to protest during the working week when we are doing everything we can to kickstart economic growth. I would also call on COSATU to work with this provincial government to motivate for more funding for critical Provincial services like education healthcare and social services as unfortunately many of the cuts we have had to make have been as a result of the cut in our budget allocation from the national government. In the longer term the way to resolve this is for more economic growth and we are doing everything we can to kickstart economic growth and supporting businesses creating more jobs.’’

Fire breaks out on Table Mountain

A fire broke out on Table Mountain late yesterday sending thick smoke and intense flames into the night sky. The blaze, visible from miles around, quickly became an iconic sight as it lit up the lower slopes of the mountain in fiery orange hues.

The fire, which reportedly started in the Newlands Ravine area, spread through the dry vegetation of the mountain, fanned by strong winds and the ongoing summer heat. By the time the fire reached its peak late into the evening, it had covered a significant area of the lower slopes, threatening nearby residential properties and the Table Mountain National Park.

Aerial firefighting units and teams on the ground were deployed to contain the blaze, but the flames were visible from the city’s central business district, emergency vehicles rushed to the scene to contain the fire.

A image of the fire was posted on social media, drawing concern from citizens and tourists who visit Table Mountain with Cape Town’s natural beauty.

Authorities have confirmed that no major injuries have been reported so far, though several roads around the area were closed, and emergency services are on high alert.

The safety of the public is our top priority, said a spokesperson for the South African National Parks SANParks. Firefighting teams are working tirelessly to control the situation, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely. This latest fire is just one of many that have occurred in the region during the dry summer months, and Table Mountain remains under constant threat from the extreme weather conditions over the past few years.

Though the fire is still burning, it is expected that it will be contained in the coming hours, with officials urging residents to stay vigilant.

The situation is being monitored closely by SANParks, while the public has been asked to avoid the affected areas for their safety.

Angry Delft residents wants principal removed

Parents and community members protested again outside a Delft school on Monday morning.

This is in relation to alleged bullying incident that occurred at Leiden High School, in January, where a 14-year-old boy was assaulted and smeared with faeces.

Protesters claim racism as well. The number of learners facing suspension is unclear at this stage. They also want the principal sacked as they believe the head of the school, dealt with the incident poorly.

Community member and, , says:

“The motivation of the protest is to get justice for the learner. We would like to achieve our demands, which include, but are not limited to the removal of a school principal as we believe he didn’t deal with the matter properly,’’ said Khanyiso Fodo, Sub-regional task member for the EFF.

“It’s not the first time we came to school. We have been dealing with this issue from day one. The department of education is not taking our concerns seriously,’’ he added.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said that allegations this was a racially-motivated attack is unsubstantiated at this stage.

“It is only the Head of Department of the WCED who can expel a learner. Secondly, the SGB has conducted a disciplinary hearing and has in fact, recommended expulsion for these learners. This was submitted to the WCED on Friday. The HOD will now have the opportunity to apply his mind. There are no grounds to charge the principal or dissolve the SGB. Procedures were followed,’’ said Bronagh Hammond, WCED spokesperson.

Political parties within Cape Town submits motion of no confidence against speaker Felicity Purchase

Political parties within the City of Cape Town has on Monday afternoon submitted a motion of no confidence against speaker Felicity Purchase. The hard copy was handed over on Monday, whilst a soft copy was emailed to Purchase on Friday.

The ANC, EFF, GOOD, NCC, PA, and Al Jama-ah, believes that Purchase violated rules as speaker. Last month, the first Council meeting of 2025 was moved virtually, following fears of disruption due to allegations of two MMC’s into tender fraud in the city’s construction sector. Parties also believed that contracts under solid waste were not properly handled.

According to the Multi party caucus, they are giving motion of no confidence in the Speaker of the City of Cape Town because she has allegedly persistently displayed a pattern of behaviour that is unbecoming of the Office of the Speaker.

‘’Her actions consistently betray the lawful expectation that the Speaker will at all material times act without fear, favour or prejudice in conducting the affairs of the Council of the City of Cape Town.  Apparently the Speaker undermined the Programming Committee resolution that the first Council meeting of 2025 will be physical (NOT VIRTUAL) however the Speaker unilaterally changed this decision based on spurious "security reasons",’’ read the joint statement.

‘’This unilateral abuse of power thus deprived elected public representatives their constitutional rights to freely participate and debate in the proceedings of Council. Further, this constitutes a flagrant violation of her Oath of Office,’’ it added.

The EFF’s Banzi Dambuza called Purchase the “most cockiest Speaker the City of Cape Town has ever had”

Patrotic Alliance’s Cheslyn Steenberg said that they support the motion as they have also experienced the bias of the Speaker and bullying tactics.

In response to the motion: “The Office of the Speaker is aware of a motion submitted by the ANC in the above-mentioned regard, and will follow due process as outlined in the requirements dealing with motions as contained under Rule 18 of the Rules of Order,’’ said Purchase’s office

The motion will be debated at the next council meeting scheduled for 27 March 2025

The suspects are yet to be arrested,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police spokesperson.

He confirmed that Makhaza police are investigating cases of carjacking, kidnapping, and rape.

The Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness confirmed the incident, saying one of their HealthNET vehicles, with an EMS staff member, was hijacked on Friday

“She is severely traumatised. The department condemns this criminal incident and violence against our essential workers who are dedicated to saving lives and providing critical care. This is an ongoing SAPS investigation,’’ said Nadia Ferreira, departmental spokesperson.

An anti-gender-based violence (GBV) organisation, Ilitha Labantu, expressed concern about the incident.

“This disturbing incident, which occurred on 21 February 2025, serves as another stark reminder of the pervasive nature of gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa, particularly within communities already facing significant socio-economic challenges,’’ said Siyabulela Monakali, Communications Manager at Ilitha Labantu.

‘’Following the recent release of crime statistics by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, we are further reminded of the severity of the situation in South Africa, particularly in Khayelitsha, which features prominently in these statistics. The attack highlights the dangerous environments in which many frontline workers, particularly women, are operating. This violence against emergency responders underscores the urgent need for reforms to improve safety and protect their rights,’’ he added.

The organisation is calling for an immediate and decisive action from law enforcement to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.

‘’The justice system must address these crimes swiftly, hold offenders accountable, and provide necessary support to survivors. Additionally, the broader crisis of crime in South Africa demands immediate attention. The failure to address the escalating violence negatively impacts women, children, and communities at large. This attack is not an isolated case but part of a larger, systemic issue of crime that requires urgent intervention to safeguard all South Africans,’’ said Monakali.

‘’Ilitha Labantu calls for greater protection for frontline workers and a review of safety measures for paramedics, police officers, and others in high-risk environments. There is also an urgent need for increased investment in gender-based violence prevention programs and survivor support services.’’

‘’This attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing violence against women and children in South Africa. Ilitha Labantu calls on the government to take concrete action to address this issue and prioritize the safety of those who serve our communities,’’ he added.

A youth development agency, Asavela Peko Foundation, echoed Ilitha Labantu’s sentiments.

‘’ Asavela Peko Foundation wishes to join Ilitha Labantu in calling upon the South African Police Service, JP Smith's City of Cape Town Department and Premier Alan Winde's Western Cape Government's National Department of Health (South Africa) to work together in finding the 7 men accused and so they face the full might of the law,’’ it said in a statement.

‘’Apart from that, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi's department must make security provision (SAPS, Law Enforcement, Soldiers/Private Armed Response etc) for the paramedics, health employees and facilities for safeguarding purposes. Our country, especially the Western Cape our communities have become nothing but an onslaught and a devils playground. We need to put an end to this trend, and communities must unite and put their foot down, enough is enough,’’ it added.

Khayelitsha COSATU Local Condemns Hijacking of Department of Health Ambulance and other state vehicles.

Khayelitsha COSATU Local expressed its outrage and condemned the recent hijacking of an ambulance belonging to the Department of Health.

‘’This incident occurred just after a Crime Prevention Engagement hosted by Khayelitsha COSATU Local on 20 February 2025, Khayelitsha Training Centre, which addressed the alarming rise of carjacking in the area. This blatant act of criminality not only compromises the delivery of essential healthcare services but also endangers the lives of both healthcare workers and residents of Khayelitsha.  It further undermines economic growth and employment opportunities in the area,’’ said Makhaya Jezile, Secretary Khayelitsha COSATU Local.

Khayelitsha COSATU Local called for swift action from law enforcement agencies:  We demand immediate and decisive action from law enforcement to apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime; Employers are urged to prioritize the safety of their employees when conducting service delivery, especially in high-risk areas.

‘’We call on residents, community leaders, and structures to be vigilant in safeguarding state resources and protecting public servants,’’ said Jezile.
