Angry residents in Witsand, Atlantis handed over a Memorandum of Demand to the offices of Subcouncil 1 on Tuesday morning, where they have articulated their grievances regarding poor service delivery.
The demands include:
1. Proper Primary School Facilities and also a High School
in Witsand.
2. Immediate Attention to Potholes and Road Resurfacing.
3. Immediate Attention to Sewer overspills.
4. Proper Clinic Facilities.
5. Basic Services to COVID Camp and Electrification of it.
6. Immediate installation of High Mast Lights in Witsand to
curb crime.
7. A Library Facility in Witsand.
8. Recreational Sports and Park Facilities in Witsand.
9. Establishment of a fully fledged Taxi Rank.
10. A Community Hall to host meetings, trainings and events
in Witsand.
11. Mobile Police Station in Witsand.
12. Enclose the Dam to safeguard the children in Witsand.
Roads were blocked and public transportation were suspended for the day. The march was led by South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO).
‘’We are giving them seven working days to answer on those
demands. We have two priorities – when are they going to implement lighting,
and electricity COVID informal settlement. If they fail to implement this, we
are going to have a problem,’’ said Moses Matiso, SANCO chairperson in Witsand.
The Economic Freedom fighters (EFF) in the ward 32 was also
part of the protest.
‘’We are marching for service delivery. We demand lighting
as crime is high in this area. Even drains are overflowing and infrastructure
are deteriorating.’’
Deputy chairperson of the youth of witsand, Aphiwe Krele, said empty promises were made, and residents are still waiting for proper facilities.
