A call on parents to fight illiteracy
By Chanel September
6 November 2006
The Western Cape Education Department wants more parental involvement to improve the poor reading, writing and counting skills.
To ensure that parents become more involved with their children’s learning the department’s aims to roll out a comprehensive media advocacy campaign as part of their 10 year Literacy and Numeracy Plan.
The campaign which aims to focus on parents and encouraging them to read, write and do calculations will also raise awareness around mother tongue education.
Education MEC for the Western Cape Cameron Dugmore told the Cape Argus that the campaign plans to go far beyond the classroom.
The campaign will be rolled out at the start of the new school year in 2007.
