The City of Cape Town will be a display of bright colours on Wednesday, when the Cape Minstrel troupes take to the streets to celebrate the "Tweede Nuwejaar" carnival parade.

The annual "Tweede Nuwejaar" festivities originates from the l8th century when slaves were granted a day off by their masters.

Most of the roads in the city central business district, will be closed until midnight as over 20 000 minstrels are expected to take part in this year's carnival.

“This year's event is 100 years old so it’s extra special. The competition is 100 years old, but the minstrels have been marching for almost 300 years,” says chairperson of the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association, Richard Stemmet.

"The minstrels parade is the highlight for many Flats families,” says Stemmet.

The carnival parade will kick of at 11am at Keizergraght, with some marching as far as Bree Street, others will continue to Bo-Kaap and carry on into Rose Street.
