Counterfeit DVDs to the value of R200m were discovered by police in Johannesburg at OR Tambo airport on Wednesday.
The consignment which was discovered during a routine inspection of the airport's cargo area, is the largest of its kind to be trafficked through a South African port of entry.
"The team of SAPS members from the anti-smuggling unit routinely searched the cargo areas for drugs and illegal items," says police spokesperson Dennis Adriao.
A consignment of counterfeit DVD players, as well as cellphones and Dolce & Gabbana clothing was found with the counterfeit DVDs according to News 24.
The two consignments was destined for Nigeria; police believe that the goods would have come back into South Africa via Nigeria.
A suspect in Nigeria has been identified and South African authorities are working with international law enforcement agencies to arrest those involved.
"Depending on the quantity of the counterfeit goods, one could be looking at quite a lengthy prison sentence," says Adriao.
