Preliminary Independent Electoral Commission figures indicate that the number of eligible voters has increased by at least half-a-million after the weekend’s voter registration drive. IEC chairperson Brigalia Bam is expected to announce the final figures for the registration weekend on Wednesday. Reports say the IEC hopes to increase the number of eligible voters to 22-million for next year’s election. Western Cape IEC co-ordinator Reverend Courtney Sampson says he was quite satisfied with the turnout.

Sampson says “we are quite satisfied with the outcome; I think that the public responded very, very well to this request for them to register and to get their names recorded on to the national common voters roll. It really pleases us in terms of the response we got.”

The IEC is also very thankful for the co-operation they got from the different parties, who all did their bit to encourage people
