Remove voter registration posters or risk being fined, warns City

Political parties or independent candidates contesting for the 2024 general elections, could face a fine, if they have not removed their voter registration posters erected on street poles across the Cape metro.

South Africans, from Saturday, 3 February to Sunday, 4 February 2024, were afforded the opportunity to register or check their existing voter registration status and if necessary, to update their registration details ahead of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.

The City of Cape Town says that some political party posters are still up, which is in breach of the City’s by-law, which stipulates that posters should be removed seven days after registration weekend. The deadline for posters to be taken down was 11 February 2024.

‘’It has come to the City's attention that some posters still remain even after the removal deadline of 11 February 2024.’’

The municipality threatened to remove any poster within the above stipulated removal deadlines at the political party's cost. The string or plastic fasteners must be removed as well. The cost recoverable as a result of contravening these rules will be R134,10 per poster removed and R194,00 for any pasted poster removed.

‘’To recover any of the unauthorised posters removed by the City, parties will need to liaise during office hours with the following Environmental Management Department officials to collect such posters,’’ said the City in a statement.

‘’If the City or IEC gets notified in writing of a poster contravention relating to a political party; the offending political party will be notified by the City of such contravention by e-mail and will be given 48 hours to remove or remedy such contravention,’’ it added.

The City encouraged residents who spot such posters to report them via the City's service request portal CCT Service Requests (capetown.gov.za). Select the illegal advertising category when reporting this issue.

All complaints relating to political party posters must be in writing and can also be sent to:
