Shoprite Group says its peanut butter is safe to eat

The Shoprite Group has confirmed that the private label peanut butter sold in its supermarkets - Ritebrand, Housebrand, Pot O’ Gold, Ubrand, Simple Truth and OK brand names – are safe for consumption.

This comes after a number of peanut butter brands were recalled, following higher than regulated levels of Aflatoxin, which is a certain fungi, and may lead to a health risk.

The recalled products are Dischem’s Lifestyle peanut butter brand, Wazoogles Superfoods, Eden All Natural, and Pick n’ Pay’s No Name peanut butter.

In a statement, the Shoprite Group said, it last week again tested aflatoxin levels in the Group's peanut butters, as a precaution.

‘’The quality and safety of our products are a top priority and undergo regular testing and quality checks. The Group’s private label peanut butter are not affected by the recent recall as it is produced in a different factory.’’

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) previously said it will probe the safety of all peanut butter brands, following the recall of more products.
