Libyan nationals operated an illegal military camp in Mpumalanga

Police have discovered an illegal military training camp run by 95 Libyan nationals in Mpumalanga, which has been operating for at least three months.

Yesterday, a joint operation comprising of the South African Police Service, Provincial Joint Operation and Intelligence Structure, and the Home Affairs Department uncovered a underground military camp on a farm in White River, designated as a training ground.

"The place, which was initially designated as a training site, appears to have been converted into an illegal military training base," said Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson, Donald Mdhluli. .

The discovery saw the arrest of the 95 Libyan nationals yesterday and their activities are now the subject of a police probe.

According to police, the Libyan nationals misrepresented themselves on their visa applications, claiming to be coming to the country for training to be security guards. It is still unclear when they gained entry into South Africa.
