According to the Weekend Argus, if local authoritites do not fast-track processes to release serviced land to people in urgent need of housing, Cape Town could face land invasions on a massive scale.
This dire warning comes from Cape Town mayor Hellen Zille who told Weekend Argus that red tape was causing lengthly delays, effectively strangling efforts to make serviced land available to thousands of people in desperate need of housing.
"We cannot afford to have people invading land because they are frustrated about long delays to get access to land for housing. We have to rid the system of blockages, we have to free up serviced land so that people can build houses", she says.
Zille claims the best immediate solution is that national, provincial and local government should make serviced land available to people who can build their own houses.
