As thousands of holiday – makers return home after their summer holidays, traffic authorities have urged motorists to obey to the rules of the road, ensuring a safe homecoming.
According to officials the fatality rate on South Africa’s roads has dropped when compared to last year.
Despite the decrease, the Western Cape has the third highest road death toll rate with 134 people losing their lives on the province’s roads. Gauteng is at the top of the list with 231 and KwaZulu-Natal at a close second with 170 road deaths.
Causes for the high accident rate on the country’s roads have been driver fatigue and heat, which has led to an increase in burst tyres.
“The festive season this year has seen a tremendous increase in traffic volumes which in turn has put a tremendous strain on our city’s road network,” says Cape Town traffic department spokesperson, Searl Johannes.
Traffic authorities in the province; have however reported a significant reduction in all spheres of prosecution such as speeding and drunk and driving.
“Overall motorists have been behaving themselves extremely well and we must commend them on that,” says Johannes.
