With Guy Fawkes approaching, the City of Cape Town has cautioned members of the public to comply with municipal by-laws controlling the discharge of display fireworks in public.
Disaster Management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons says “The City will next week announce the official designated areas and times throughout the metropole where fireworks can be discharged under strict measures to prevent injuries, damage to the infrastructure and environment. By-laws are in place to prohibit the discharge of fireworks in the presence of animals and to limit any inconvenience to people. A maximum fine for those found guilty of breaking these laws is R600 or 12 months imprisonment.”
Solomons urges people to report any incidents immediately, incase of illegal discharge of fireworks can be reported to the Metro Police 0860 765 423 or of an emergency please contact the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 107 or 021 480 7700 from a cell phone or the SAPS Emergency Control Centre on 10111.
