On Sunday morning the Shofar church in Stellenbosch was attacked by six naked men who stormed into the church holding pepper sprays. What was meant as a prank by some, caused harm and destruction to others.
The ACDP’s Steve Swart says that the attack was a violation of religious freedom and that places of worship are sacred.
“It is outrageous that members should have part in desecrating a worship service as it happened, and we call upon authorities to take the strongest possible measures when dealing with the perpetrators,” said Swart.
The party strongly condemns the attack on the church and expects the university to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The ACDP says that needs to be made clear to all students that this kind of behaviour would not be tolerated.
Swart said, “Clearly we need to take steps and secure our places of worship to ensure that these incidents do not happen in the future.”
