South Africa’s Electoral Commission says the recent two voter registration weekends have led to a 3.16 million increase in the number of registered voters.
Kate Bapela of theIEC, says the voters’ roll now contains the names of just over 23 million voters.
She says more people registered as voters over the past weekend than expected and this indicates that the IEC’s information campaign has been successful.
Bapela said they have broken the record of the 22 million they were expecting.
Bapela said this “was the greatest surprise for us” as the figures were beyond IEC’s expectations.
