Consultations between Provincial Government and the organisers of The Cape Argus Cycle Tour, resulted in the decision to open Chapman’s Peak Drive for the duration of the world’s biggest timed cycle race.
The road has been under construction since June last year, but will be opened on March 8, 2009 for the approximated 35 000 cyclists.
“The decision is to open the road only on that day. There is still another four to five months of work that will continue following the race, which would lead to the road being opened permanently,” said Koketso Sechane, spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Public works in the Western Cape.
