Cape Town is ranked among the most violent cities in the world.
On Thursday the 11th of July 2019 President Cyril Ramaphosa gave the go ahead for the SANDF to be deployed to 10 precincts identified by Minister Bheki Cele. One of the many reasons why the army will be deployed to our communities is to see an end to violence, crime and gangsterism. President Cyril Ramaphosa said the army is capable of performing peacekeeping operations.
SANDF’s deployment will focus on deploying troops for cordon and search, string points in hotspots, observation, foot and vehicle patrols; air support for troops and identification of substance manufacturing labs and any other operations that may be determined from time to time.
Since the army has been deployed it had an immediate impact on crime in the Western Cape. A total of 25 murders were recorded over the weekend of the 19th July compared to the previous weekend 12th July with 43 murders.
The army has already been deployed to a few communities where the reactions of people were both satisfying and fearful. Many people feels this will help their communities get rid of the bad apples and others are against it is saying “armies are not trained for law enforcement and to use maximum force.
The 10 different communities are Bishop Lavis, Mitchells Plain, Delft, Elsies River, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Phillipi, Kraaifontein and Manenberg.
