Silent protest outside World Economic Forum on Africa over femicide.

Silent protest outside World Economic Forum on Africa over femicide.

On Wednesday morning, protestors gathered at the Cape Town train station where they then silently walked to the Cape Town International Convention Centre with their mouths taped closed, to continue their protest for an hour. The silence hour ended at 10am.

The Total Shutdown: Intersectional Women’s Movement Against Gender-based Violence is staging a silent protest outside the World Economic Forum this morning. Uyinene Mrwetyana, Jesse Hess, Leighandre Jegels, Janiko Mallo, Lynette Volschenk and Meghan Cremer were recently murdered as a result of femicide.

The Total Shutdown protest comes following the recent headlines of violence against women and children. Calling on government to intervene to stop violence against women, refusing to leave the area after being asked by police. The police are watching over the group outside CTICC while the World Economic Forum continues inside.
