Cape Town Speaker retires after 45 years of service

City of Cape Town speaker, Dirk Smit, announced during Thursday’s full council meeting, his retirement as Speaker and councillor after 45 years in public service.

Smit served as a councillor and then speaker of the City of Cape Town since 2006.

He has also served as chairperson of the Salga’s Speakers’ Forum of the Western Cape, since May 2011 up until now.

DA Western Cape Acting Provincial Leader, Albert Fritz bid farewell to Smit and thanked him for his service.

‘’Dirk has performed his duties with distinction and he leaves behind large shoes for his predecessors to fill.’’
