It’s been reported that consumers are warned that the higher cost of fuel - increasing by a record 68c per litre at midnight will hit motorists hard.
This means that, a litre of petrol will now be costing almost R9 it will cost approximately R8.67 at the coast and R8.91 in Gauteng.
The increase in the price of paraffin is also set to increase by R1,18 a litre.
The bulk of the increase is a result of the increase in international product prices, with crude oil trading at around $105 per barrel, combined with a weaker rand.
In addition, the increase of R0,05 to the Road Accident Fund and R0,06 to the fuel levy, as provided for in Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel's Budget speech, will have an impact.
Bush Radio took to the streets and here is what a few people had to say:
“Petrol is going to influence the cost of living because whatever increase there is in the petrol price will eventually get into the food, travelling and everything else, so its going to be a hell of a negative thing for the poor guy in the streets.
“But I actually pity the guy who is owning a car, because he is going to have standing more than he is going to use it, because he is going to get worrying now; cost of travelling and so on,” says one guy.
Then we met a man that got stuck because of the petrol that is so expensive. He was looking for someone to help him.
He says that he put a hundred rands petrol in yesterday and he works in Athlone. He says that he lives in Wynberg and drove from there to Athlone thrice and his tank is empty.
A lady who preferred to remain anonymous says that it unspeakable that the petrol is so expensive.
“I don’t know what to think, R1 is a lot of money and I think most people are going to buy good shoes and getting a lot more fit.
But in the long run she thinks it is going to be disastrous.
“Everything goes up but our wages don’t go up, how does that work?
“It’s not fair,” exclaims James Linden.
