The new Mitchells Plain driving testing centre has been extremely busy these past two days, following the opening of the centre on Monday. Hundreds of people wanting to make bookings for their learners or drivers licence, queued outside the gates from 03h30.
Traffic spokesperson for the City of Cape Town, Inez Lackay, says that even though there has been a lot of commotion, the department is happy with the relief the opening of the new testing centre is providing.
“This morning people rushed to the building. As vehicles came in, we had hundreds of people storming towards the building. So far, we have managed to keep things under control,” said Lackay.
Most testing centres across the province are faced with back logs, for learners and drivers licence bookings, of up to six months. The long queues proved that the City is in desperate need of more testing centres. Lackay says that the opening of more testing centres is in the pipeline.
“A testing station is expected to be opened in Fishoek later this year, or early next year. Also, the one in Somerset West will be reopened,” she said.
