The City of Cape Town alongside with Deaf SA launched a new cell phone application to help the hearing impaired and the hard of hearing communities to report emergencies to the City’s Public Emergency Communications Centre easier.
“The system automatically
pinpoints the user’s location ensuring that emergency respondents can reach
them as quickly as possible without the resident having to call our call
centre. This projects represents more than just a technical solution, it reflects
our city values including the belief in human dignity and equal access to
essential services and the importance of ensuring the same high standards for
all residents,” said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
The launch marked the fulfilment
of a promise to empower hearing impaired and hard of hearing persons with a
vital emergency reporting tool.
When a user reports an
emergency, confirmation will be sent via SMS and will allow emergency services
to ask follow up questions.
