Western Cape police says its making strides to address gang
and extortion related crime. SAPS recently conducted a takedown operation in
Delft.
Police said a multidisciplinary task team arrested five
suspects aged between 30 and 35 on charges of murder and extortion, last
Friday. These suspects were traced and arrested for their alleged involvement
for incidents of gangsterism and extortion in the Delft policing area.
The first suspect, a 33-year-old man, was arrested when he
handed himself over to police. Five cellphones were seized at his house in The
Hague, and were handed in as exhibits and further processing.
Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk said this suspect is
believed to be a leader of a local gang grouping in the Delft area. He is
charged for POCA Section 9, three murder cases, a triple murder, dealing in
drugs, two extortion cases, and intimidation.
A second suspect, a 33-year-old man, was requisitioned from
Goodwood prison. Van Wyk explained that he was in custody prior to the takedown
on another matter relating to a murder case registered in Elsies Rivier July
last year
A third suspect was also requisitioned from Goodwood
prison. The 35-year-old man, is in custody on another matter prior to takedown
operation. He is charged for POCA and a triple murder case
All the suspects were brought before court, and their cases
were centralised for investigation purposes, and their cases were postponed
until the 27 March for formal bail application.
