On 24 December 2008 nine employees of City Electricity Services were arrested by members of the SA Police and the Copperheads for the alleged theft and sale of copper cable.

Four of the employees were identified from surveillance video footage showing them removing the cable from a substation.

When they were confronted with the footage they implicated the other staff members. Chairman of the Copperheads from the City of Cape Town Councilor Pieter Van Dalen said the men were arrested while they were busy stripping copper cables.

“They were using council vehicles and council time to go sell copper to the scrap yard”

“The men are out on bail of a thousand rand and have been suspended until criminal and departmental hearings are finished”
