During the early hour of the morning a cash-in-transit occurred near a hardware outlet in Brackenfell.

A cash vehicle stopped in front of the hardware outlet to pick-up money. One security guard went inside to fetch money, while the other security guard waited in the vehicle.

An approaching white Nissan double cab bakkie collided with the stationary security vehicle from the front. Four armed men alighted from the bakkie, threatened the guard and ordered him to lie on the ground.

The suspects went to the back of the security vehicle, cut a hole with a grinder, and took a total of three cash boxes (two cash boxes contained an undisclosed amount of money and one was empty.

The bakkie, that was left by the suspects, was reported stolen in Stellenbosch 5 October 2008.
The suspects ran to a nearby parked white BMW with a seated driver, after which all five suspects fled the scene. They are still at large.

During the incident shots were fired by the suspects. Nobody sustained any injuries.
Inspector Roland Kuhn says shortly after the incident the BMW was found abandoned in Gardener Street, Vredekloof. The vehicle was reported stolen during September 2008 in Kleinvlei.A case of arm robbery and theft has been opened
