Arms deal investigation continuing

Lusanda Bill

The Hawks investigation into the arms deal is probing a possible fraud amounting to around half-a-billion-Rands.

Hawks chief Anwar Dramat and National Prosecuting Authority chief Menzi Simelane briefed MPs in Parliament today on the ongoing investigations into the controversial arms deal.

The investigations involve overseas companies which are British Aerospace and the German Frigate Consortium.

Anwar Dramat said “it could take up to five years for the two probes to be completed. Both legs of the investigation require information from abroad, and they were still awaiting a letter confirming legal assistance from overseas authorities on the matter”.

The MPs were not satisfied with time frame to complete the probes, saying it’s too long.
