Lusanda Bill
7 September 2010
It’s back to work today for public sector workers. 1.3 million workers in the public sector embarked on an indefinite strike for twenty days, refusing to budge from their demands.
The union members demanded an 8.6 percent wage increase and a 1000 rand housing allowance, government last week made another offer of a 7.5 percent wage increase and an 800 rand housing allowance.
The nineteen unions representing the state workers said in a joint statement yesterday "Labour has decided to suspend the strike and this does not mean we have accepted the state offer".
Negotiations with government and unions will still continue until a final wage settlement is reached.
The strike has seen severe disruptions to the health and education sectors with continued reports of intimidation and violence.
