Cosatu threatens strike in the Western Cape

Lusanda Bill
8 September 2010

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has threatened a renewed public sector strike in the Western Cape over the application of the no work no pay principle in the province.

This comes after unions suspended the strike while government and unions come to a final wage offer.

Premier Helen Zille wrote a letter to the provincial secretary of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) which was dated September 2 and faxed to Nehawu on Monday.

Helen Zille stated in the letter that her administration had been directed by the national department of public service and administration in writing to strictly apply the principle to striking employees.

Cosatu has given the Democratic Alliance controlled provincial government until Thursday to withdraw the threat of deductions.
