The Congress of South African Trade Unions says recent service delivery protests are in part a response to the levels of inequality in society.
Cosatu’s Patrick Craven says elsewhere in Africa there is far greater poverty, but not the same amount of social unrest.
This is because in South Africa, poor communities live in an entirely different world from luxury suburbs next door.
Craven says the situation is made worse when people’s own local representatives adopt a capitalist lifestyle.
