Stricter smoking regulations

Lusanda Bill
9 September 2010

Regulations that would enforce stricter controls on smoking have been welcomed by The National Council against Smoking today.

The Health Department has been defining the rules around public smoking.

If the smoking regulation is enforced, people who smoke in stadiums or in front of entrances to public buildings could be charged from R500 up to R50, 000.

The National Council against Smoking Dr Yusuf Saloojee said today the laws will ensure that public spaces are truly smoke free zones. “Another area where we receive many complaints is smoking in restaurants outdoors. Non-smokers say they also want to sit outdoors and enjoy the fresh air, so that is another area which will be regulated”.
