On his way home, Wesley April, a Cape Times reporter was attacked twice in just five minutes after leaving work at 6pm heading for the central bus station in broad daylight.

April fled a pair of would-be muggers who threatened to stab him for his cell phone, only to be apprehended by a gang of youths who grabbed his bag, throwing him on to the ground.

According to the Cape Times, just minutes after the first incident behind the Grand Parade, April was approached by a short man asking for a R2.

“I tried to walk on, explaining that I didn’t have any money, but five or six of them surrounded me,” said April.

Alert to the fact that the youths wanted to rob him, April said, “I knew they were trying to rob me and I tried to barge my way out, but they grabbed my bag, throwing me on to the ground,”

According to the report, April clung on the bag, resisting the theft until the shouting of passers-by scared the group of teenagers away.

Derek Bock of the Central City Improvement District said, “This is totally unacceptable. We pride ourselves on having the safest city centre in South Africa and incidents like these undo all the good work that the CCID has done in the last six years.”

More officers would be deployed, as six pm is shift changeover time.
