Motorists travelling from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth have been advised to use the N1 to Beaufort West, Aberdeen, Graaf-Reniet and onwards to Port Elizabeth.
This is the message from disaster management services who are monitoring the section of the Kaaiman’s Pass on the N2 near Dolphin Point at the Wilderness, which is slipping into the sea at a rate of around 3 millimetres per hour.
According to Independent Online, this means that a section of the road is slipping by 30 centimetres every 10 hours. Despite this, the local fire chief, Annelise Lamprecht, says that the single lane that is open to traffic on the land side of the crack is stable, however, no vehicles weighing more than five tonnes will be allowed to pass through.
Work is underway to upgrade the Saasveld Road that offers an alternative route between George and Knysna.
