Thousands of metro area clothing workers in the country can look forward to extra wages at the end of this week.
This is because, some years ago, their trade union (SACTWU) reached an agreement with clothing employers for extra wages when a public holiday falls on a Saturday.
In the Western Cape Province, the agreement states that when a Public Holiday falls on a Saturday, workers will be paid 5-and-a-half hours' extra wages if no work is performed on such a day.
Etienne Vlok from the South African Clothing Workers Union said,
“This agreement was reached several years ago, so as the National Women’s day was on Saturday, so all workers around the country will be paid extra wages”
Vlok added,
“ This is a welcoming injection these times when food prices and fuel prices increase greatly and it is a welcoming injection especially when workers are the lowest paid in manufacturing industry”
