Fears of xenophobic attacks begin again in Ekurhuleni

Tension is running high in Ekurhuleni, as there have been renewed threats against foreign shop owners at Ramaphose informal settlement.

Shop owners have been threatened by locals who want them to close down their businesses and leave the area.

MEC Humphrey Mmemezi said "we would not tolerate a situation where people decide to take the law into their own hands".

In 2008, 62 people were killed and 150 000 displaced in a wave of xenophobic attacks that started in Gauteng.

Police are now on high alert in the area and the housing department is monitoring the situation closely.
