Unions pleased with restructuring of Road Accident Fund

The South African Transport and Allied workers Union (SATWU), South African Commuter Organisation (SACO) and South African National Civics Organisation (SANCO) has rejected the manner in which the urgent application was heard and the interim order handed down on 8 August 2008 in Cape Town.
Addressing the matter of the restructuring of the Road Accident fund (RAF), SATAWU, SACO and SANCO say that it is apparent in her ruling that the judge did not apply her mind as bias was exercised from the onset in favour of her colleagues in the Law Society.
The unions say that RAF is a public entity and thus should act to serve in the interest of the people. They believe the interim order is a serious set back for justice and equity for ordinary claimants who have historically being exploited by unscrupulous attorneys.
SATAWU general secretary, Randall Howard says that they fully support the amendment in the Road accident fund.
“It will ensure that claimants are paid out directly, as this will stop any forms of fraudulent activity. The system will ensure justice, fairness and equity for victims of accidents in South Africa.”
