The Democratic Alliance has sent a letter of invitation to Cosatu Secretary-General, Zwelinzima Vavi, to attend the DA conference of health in Gauteng.
This comes after Vavi’s comments over the weekend at the South African Medical Association Conference.
Vavi argued that there was a need to shift the way society funds its healthcare, by incorporating healthcare resources in to the public sector.
The DA believes that his dangerous solutions need to be publicly debated.
The DA’s Lindiwe Mazibuko said: “This ignores all the evidence from all over the world that the most successful health care systems are those in which there is substantial involvement in the delivery services from the private sector.”
Mazibuko continued by saying that his opinions, if they were to be taken up in national policy, would put an end to the possibility of establishing a health system which could truly meet the health needs of all South Africans.
The DA will be hosting a conference next week to debate the future of South African health care.
