Dugmore says his department starting to take shape

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports, with newly appointed MEC Cameron Dugmore held its first official press conference today.

MEC Dugmore outlined a number of programmes which seeks to strengthen his vision for the Western Cape.

Dugmore said he is happy to report that, 33 days into his new portfolio, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is, “poised to begin the journey to reposition the Western Cape as the creative and wellness capital of Africa and the world.”

“I believe the department has a critical role to play to promote nation-building, social cohesion, reconciliation, empowerment and economic growth.”

Dugmore say he acquainted himself with the senior management, programmes and Annual Performance Plan, he also says he wants to acknowledge the good work done especially by his predecessor, MEC Whitey Jacobs.

Shortly after Dugmore was sworn in he announced the appointment of an acting head of Department, Brent Walters, Chief Director, on loan from the Department of the Premier. Walters is an experienced and highly capable administrator, who started his career in government as Deputy Director for Sport.

Dugmore says he believes Walters’s appointment is critical to bringing stability and improves service delivery.

The department is in the process of restructuring to improve capacity for service delivery. Dugmore says the department will present the new-look macro organogram and personnel plan to the Governance and Administration Cabinet Committee later this month and finally to Cabinet in October for approval.

“I believe there is massive potential for sport, arts, culture and creative industries to boost the economy of the Western Cape and provide increased opportunities for job creation and growth.”
