It is a proud moment indeed for top Cape Town community radio station Bush Radio as three of their trainees nabbed prestigious awards for excellent work done by South African journalists in community radio.
Chanél September, Rhodé Marshall and Celeste Ganga were delighted to be the winners of their respective categories.
The awards were initiated by SABC News and other media broadcasting partners to encourage community media to go beyond the call of duty and produce news and current affairs that meets the highest standard.
Bush Radio’s Programme Integrator, Adrian Louw, says that this achievement makes the station very proud.
“I think that the SABC awards go some way in acknowledging the work of community radio," says Louw.
Excellence in eight categories was acknowledged with the winners of each category receiving R10 000 and a trophy.
Chanél September won the award for Excellence in Investigative Journalism. “I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to give people working at community radio in South Africa that platform to display their work," says September.
Celeste Ganga won the Excellence in In-Depth News Coverage and Current Affairs and described the award as being "unexpected, but nice to receive that type of recognition".
“I am looking forward to the opportunities that are going to come with winning this award” was what the winner of the Excellence in Journalism award Rhodé Marshall had to say.
Denisia Adams, who was a finalist in the Excellence in Developmental Journalism category, says just being nominated was a big honour as she had no journalism experience or training before starting work at the station four months ago.
“It proves that the training at Bush Radio is of a high standard,” says Adams.
