This morning, Mayor Hellen Zille was invited to speak at the first ever Woman’s day celebration held in Bishop Lavis. Ward councilor Asa Abrahams hosted the event, where women were encouraged to empower themselves so that they are better equipped to face personal and economic challenges.
“Bishop Lavis is a disadvantaged area, and women do not know what their rights are,” said Abrahams. She says that there are many women who are single parents and do not receive grants or child support from the fathers, mainly because they do not know what their rights are.
She feels that the woman in the community need to be empowered and learn how to be self employed. Also, Abrahams added, that when children are hungry or are in need the natural thing for them to do would be to go straight to their mothers, this is why women need to learn to assist and support others in different ways.
